Basel medtech company acquires start-up

Medartis has acquired 100 per cent ownership of Mimedis. The two Basel-based companies can now use Mimedis’ digital competences to enhance Medartis’ portfolio of implants.

Medartis, which was founded in Basel in 1997, works in the field of osteosynthesis, producing both titanium implants and instruments for bone operations on the skull. “The progressive digitalisation modifies also medical treatment. Thus, preoperative planning for surgery is becoming increasingly relevant,” commented CEO Willi Miesch on the background to the Mimedis acquisition in a statement.

Mimedis was formed as a start-up from a partnership between the University of Northwest Switzerland FHNW’s School of Life Sciences in Muttenz in the canton of Basel-Landschaft and the University Hospital Basel. The start-up company has developed a software that hospitals can use for preoperative planning. The software also facilitates 3D planning of operations including bone implants.

Miesch added: “Mimedis’ planning software ideally complements Medartis’ product portfolio. This includes both planning of complex interventions with our craniofacial MODUS implants as well as patient specific implants not included in the standard portfolio.”

Now, the start-up company Mimedis will be able to offer its software to a wider market. “The extensive market presence of Medartis and the integration of our digital product range will allow for a larger number of patients to benefit from individualized implant solutions,” commented CEO Ralf Schumacher.
