Jura promotes brownfield land

The Canton of Jura boasts 51 hectares of brownfield land ripe for development. Around half of the sites are in commercial zones. If developed, there would be space for some 2,100 workplaces and inhabitants.

There is plenty of space for new industrial developments and residential areas in the canton of Jura. As the canton writes in a statement, it has 51 hectares of brownfield land in zoned areas – or 91 sites with a minimum surface area of 1,500 square meters. Although included in the canton’s inventory as early as 2011, half of the brownfield sites remain unused.

While around half of the current sites are in industrial zones, 43 per cent are in residential or mixed areas. Sixty per cent of the sites are in the Ajoie region around Porrentruy; 35 per cent in the Delémont region; and the rest in the Franches-Montagnes. Buildings fit for renovation already stand on a good half of the sites, but nine of the 91 brownfields could be re-appropriated, according to the canton – in part because they have good transport connections or are centrally located.

The canton estimates that a total of 1,288 full-time jobs and living space for 987 people could be created on the brownfield sites.
