The University of Basel is committing to the canton of Basel-Landschaft by opening a new campus in Münchenstein. Both Basel cantons agreed on the decision to strengthen the university’s bi-cantonal sponsorship.
Following the decision by the cantons of Basel and Basel-Landschaft, the Faculties of Law and of Business and Economics are moving to Dreispitz in Münchenstein, in a developmental step that will benefit the whole scientific and economic region of Basel, announced the University of Basel in a statement.
With good prospects and public transport connections, Münchenstein was a clear choice: the new University of Basel site is close to the arts campus of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), which is also opening a new build for its economics arm to create a university cluster in Münchenstein.
“Just ten years after the joint sponsorship treaty came into force, we are opening an important site for the university in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, and with it a new chapter in the history of partnership and the university,” according to the statement.
Ulrich Vischer, President of the Board of the University of Basel, commented: “We are delighted that the canton of Basel-Landschaft, which sponsors the university, is now getting a fully fledged campus.”
University President Andrea Schenker-Wicki confirmed that the “faculties affected by the decision for the Dreispitz campus took it very well”. At the same time, she highlighted the challenges the university would face with the upcoming building work.
With the joint sponsorship treaty, the two Basel cantons also agreed on a new financing model, with each assuming a residual deficit for the university with regards to its economic performance. For real estate, there is a “strategic planning steering committee”. There are plans to revise the treaty by the end of 2019, with both governments committed to “a full university with a clear focus on life sciences”.
