Basel fights for rail connection

The French side is not giving enough priority to a direct rail connection to the EuroAirport, according to a letter written by the governments of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft. In it, they call for a binding commitment to finance the connection.

The governments of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft have written a letter to the French transport minister Elisabeth Borne in which they refer to a report recently presented by the French side that gives low priority to the rail connection to the EuroAirport (EAP). In the three scenarios that presented in the report, financial support from the French government for the rail connection is recommended in only one of the scenarios.

According to a joint statement from the governments of the two cantons, this is “surprising” given that financing commitments have already been made by various participants, including the federal government and both cantons.

In their letter, the two Basel cantons emphasize the considerable benefits of the rail connection to the Basel-Mulhouse Airport and indicate that they expect the French government “to make a binding decision in its public transport investment programme in favour of financing the EAP rail link”.

The two governments also highlight the central importance of the rail link for the development of the airport, as well as its significant economic importance for the region as well as Alsace. Both cantonal governments therefore expect that “binding financing of the EuroAirport rail project will be provided for in the French government’s investment programme”.
