The Basel-based pharmaceutical company Novartis has appointed Bertrand Bodson to the new role of Chief Digital Officer. Bodson will be responsible for creating and executing a company-wide digital strategy.
Bertrand Bodson will join Novartis in his new role as Chief Digital Officer in January 2018 and will report directly to CEO Joseph Jiminez. According to a Novartis statement announcing the appointment, his role will be to lead Novartis’ digital transformation. This will involve improving the way the company uses data in drug discovery and development, as well as automating business processes.
A Belgian citizen, Bodson is currently the Chief Digital and Marketing Officer for Sainsbury’s subsidiary Argos, which he helped transform from a traditional catalogue business into the third-largest online retailer in the UK. Prior to Sainsbury’s Argos, he held senior roles at EMI Music and Amazon, and he co-founded the social networking and content sharing website Bragster.com. He has an MBA from Harvard University.
“I am very excited to be joining Novartis to play a part in its efforts to reimagine medicine by leveraging digital on behalf of millions of patients and practitioners,” said Bodson. While digital transformation is “one of the most important and disruptive challenges in the years to come”, Bodson believes that Novartis is well positioned to drive it.
