Basel – The University of Basel is a member of a new research network. Together with other universities in the Upper Rhine region, it will conduct research on issues related to sustainability over the coming two years.
The Upper Rhine Cluster for Sustainability Research (URCforSR) consists of the universities of Basel, Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Mulhouse, Strasbourg and Koblenz-Landau, writes the University of Basel in a statement. Several other technical colleges and research institutes are also involved in the network.
Over the next two years, around 100 researchers will conduct interdisciplinary research across national borders on sustainability-related subjects. The network officially kicks off on 22 November.
The research group is looking to have a European dimension and intends to apply for European funding for joint projects. Its main focus is on the policy of sustainable growth, which encompasses a number of subjects such as the provision of energy or cultural and linguistic factors related to sustainable development.
“Although sustainability research has great potential in this region, there has been comparatively little cross-border cooperation until now. We want to change this,” said Paul Burger from the University of Basel, who is heading up the research group.
