The University of Basel is among the world’s top 100 universities, according to the Times Higher Education University Ranking. In 4th place in Switzerland, the university is kicking off the autumn semester with more new students than last year.
The University of Basel is one of the top 100 universities in the world, according to the World University Ranking compiled by Times Higher Education (THE). Ascending nine places over last year to 94th, it impressed with its international orientation and partnerships with businesses, as well as the number of published papers.
Four Swiss universities feature in the top 100. In 13th place, the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) is the best, followed by the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) in 38th place and the University of Zurich in 90th place. These rankings make the University of Basel the fourth best university in Switzerland.
Its high ranking is reflected in the continuously growing number of students. On Monday, 12,015 students and doctoral students will start the autumn semester, marking an increase of 1,800 over last year. Bachelor’s programs in particular are welcoming more students, with 1,465 new students registered, compared to 1,350 last year.
The University of Oxford, California Institute of Technology and the University of Cambridge topped the ranking, which uses 13 indicators to compare almost 1,400 universities in 92 countries. Teaching environment, research quantity and influence, research contributions, private economy and international orientation are among the indicators.
