New partners join rock laboratory

The Mont Terri rock laboratory in Saint-Ursanne is one of the leading organizations conducting research into clay formation. Its partners stem from across the world, but with two new institutions the field of research is now set to grow.

The Federal Office of Topography, swisstopo, runs the Mont Terri research laboratory, whose research partners have primarily focused on safe underground storage of low, intermediate and high-level radioactive waste. Now, their field of research is set to grow, according to a statement from the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport.

With the German Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management and the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), two new institutions have joined the organization’s more than 21 research partners from nine countries. The ETH brings “new impetus to the relatively new field of research into CO2 storage”, writes the statement.

The Canton of Jura owns the rock and gives operator swisstopo annual approval for its research projects. Since 2006, 150 experiments have been conducted into the hydrogeological, geochemical and geotechnical characterization of opalinus clay.
