Basel is among the top ten dynamic cities in Europe, according to a study from Savills Investment. The city in the triborder region of Switzerland, France and Germany is an outstanding logistics location and stands out for its innovative pharmaceutical industry.
Global real estate investment manager Savills Investment Management (Savills IM) included Basel as among the top ten dynamic cities in Europe in this year's Savills IM Dynamic Cities Index.
The city on the Rhine River scored particularly well in the infrastructure category. Savills IM praises the city’s strategic location in the tri-border region of Switzerland, France and Germany. Located on the European freight corridor, Basel benefits from access to Europe’s majors motorways and rail networks. A new transshipment terminal named Gateway Basel Nord is currently being developed at the intersection of rail, road and Rhine.
But Basel is far more than an important logistics location. Savills IM also emphasizes the city’s leading position in innovation. Thanks in particular to the pharmaceutical industry, Basel has one of the highest patent densities in Europe. According to Savills IM, more than 700 life science companies have settled in the region.
Basel also scored well in the ranking for its skilled workforce. Thanks to the city’s high standard of living and strong purchasing power, Basel attracts domestic and international talent. Individuals from more than 165 nations live and work in Basel, and the city is home to 40,000 expats. Around 70,000 crossborder commuters from France and Germany travel to work in Basel each day.
London came in first place in the 2018 ranking, followed by Cambridge, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Dublin and Munich. Basel came in 10th, making it the only Swiss city to place in the top ten. Zurich came in 11th, Lausanne 12th and Bern 24th.
Savills IM analysed 130 European cities and urban regions to compile this year's ranking.
