The canton of Basel set a new record in the tourism industry in June. Never before have as many overnight stays been registered for a single month since records began. Alongside Art Basel, this is largely due to the life sciences sector.
In June, the canton of Basel-Stadt registered 135,236 overnight stays, it was reported in a cantonal press release. This is the highest figure ever seen since statistics began to be recorded in 1934. While the Art Basel fair drew in 95,000 fans of art to the city, the canton has also enjoyed an increase in visitors attending various international congresses in the life sciences sector.
The majority of this 6.7 per cent growth on the previous month is owing to visitors from other parts of Switzerland, where a rise of 22.9 per cent was recorded. At 1.4 per cent, growth was slightly lower among international visitors, though with 96,582 overnight stays by foreign guests, a record was set in this area, too.
The number of overnight stays in the first half of 2018 was also up, by 4.3 per cent. Again, domestic visitors accounted for the lion’s share of this rise, with 11.4 per cent. Furthermore, growth has been recorded for overnight stays by guests from India (30.9 per cent), France (6.3 per cent) and Germany (2.8 per cent).
