The canton of Jura will be connected to the French TGV network with the timetable change in December 2018. This is made possible by reopening the railway line between Delle and Belfort, which was co-financed by Switzerland and the Jura.
As of 9 December 2018, it will take only 3 hours and 45 minutes to travel by train from the Jura capital Delémont to Paris. From Porrentruy, the capital of Ajoie, it will take only 3 hours and 15 minutes, according to a statement from the Canton of Jura on the upcoming timetable change.
Ten RegioExpress trains between Biel in the canton of Bern and the French border railway station Delle will be extended to the TGV station Belfort-Montbéliard, resulting in seven trains to Paris each day.
The connection to the French high-speed rail network is made possible by reopening the direct railway line between Delle and Belfort, which had been closed to passenger transport in 1992 and freight transport in 1993. When planning the Rhine-Rhône high-speed rail line on the French side, the subject of reopening the line to Switzerland was raised.
In 2006, trains once again travelled from the Swiss border town Boncourt in the canton of Jura to Delle. In 2014, Switzerland and France signed an agreement to restore and electrify the 22-kilometre-long route between Delle and Belfort.
The federal government contributed €24.7 million to the total costs of €110 million, and the Canton of Jura €3.2 million.
