Basel attracts international professionals

Basel – Basel is the most attractive city in Switzerland for professionals from abroad. In the latest Expat City Ranking, Basel came ahead of both Zurich and Geneva and ranks among the top 10 in the world.

Basel came in ninth place among the 51 cities in the Expat City Ranking. Zurich came in 23rd, Geneva in 29th. Manama, the capital city of Bahrain, is the most popular city among expats. Prague, Madrid, Kuala Lumpur and Amsterdam round off the top five, and Barcelona, Johannesburg, Bangkok and Frankfurt complete the top 10.

InterNations asked international professionals to rate more than 25 different aspects of living abroad. The ratings were then bundled in various combinations to create different indices and subcategories. In the Quality of Urban Living index, Basel came in first place, ahead of Zurich. In its subcategory Safety & Security, Basel also came in first place, while in Travel & Transport it came in fourth. For the Urban Work Life category, Basel came in ninth place, with Zurich in 14th. In the subcategory Job Security, Basel placed particularly well in fifth place, but it was weaker in other subcategories such as ease of integration and overall financial conditions.

In its country report, InterNations found that the average international professional in Switzerland is 42 years old and 60 per cent likely to be female. The majority come from Germany, Italy and the U.K., with 10 per cent each. Swiss professionals, in contrast, are most likely to work in Brazil, the U.S. and the U.K.
