University of Basel increases support of Innovation

The University of Basel is aiming to increasingly support start-ups, knowledge transfer of technology into society and the economy and is seeking more active collaborations with the private industry. With these goals in mind, the University of Basel President’s Board has recently taken several measures.

Associate Vice President for Innovation

The President’s Board has elected Prof Hans-Florian Zeilhofer to be the University’s new Associate Vice President for Innovation. Hans-Florian Zeilhofer is Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Chief Physician for Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital Basel.

Hans-Florian Zeilhofer is well-known and -respected in the start-up and innovation scene in Basel and beyond. He has co-founded several successful start-ups, for example, AOT (Advanced Osteotomy Tools), which has developed a laser robot capable of cutting bone precisely and gently, and Mininavident, which developed a 3D navigation system for dental implants. In addition, Hans-Florian Zeilhofer has co-founded the company MTIP (MedTech Innovation Partner), a venture capital investor which supports start-ups in medical technology. 

In his function as Associate Vice President for Innovation, Hans-Florian Zeilhofer will support and partly represent the President’s Board in regard to the topic of innovation. Within this topic, he will play a key role in the continuing strategic development and communication and make a crucial contribution towards establishing a culture of innovation at the University of Basel. 

Creation of an Innovation & Corporate Relations Office

The University of Basel recently introduced its own Innovation & Corporate Relations Office, situated in the President’s Office and headed by Christian Elias Schneider. The Office is the central contact point at the University for all students, researchers and employees of the university interested in innovation and entrepreneurship. It coordinates the different support services for spin-offs and opens channels to private and other external partners. More information at:  

Uni Basel Innovation Day – 10 November 2017

This year, the University organizes its first Innovation Day. The Innovation Day takes place on Friday afternoon, 10th of November in localities of the Switzerland Innovation Park in Allschwil. Participation is limited.

Start-ups, private companies, venture capitalists and university representatives will introduce exciting projects and discuss challenges and success factors in innovation. The event is open to students, researchers and entrepreneurs of all academic areas and offers a unique opportunity to get acquainted first hand with innovation at the University of Basel and to get to know interesting and inspiring personalities in a relaxed atmosphere.
